About Us:

As the first livelihood museum in Hong Kong, Wanchai Livelihood Place is established and organized by the Community Development Services of St. James’ Settlement and a group of enthusiastic inhabitants. On the one hand, we aim to preserve and propagate the cultural essence of Wanchai through exhibitions, cultural tours, workshops and other activities; on the other, we hope to encourage local participation in deciding the future of the district and cultivate a sense of belonging and cultural identification. To celebrate the spirit of multi-culturalism in Wanchai, exhibitions at the Wanchai Livelihood Place change on a seasonal basis. Some highlights of the past exhibitions include the exhibitions looking at the development of the entertainment of the mass public – “Cinema, Comic Books, Radio” and the exhibition exploring fashion and garment – “Fashion and Garment : Yesterday and Today”. Since opening in January 2007, the exhibitions at the Wanchai Livelihood Museum are warmly welcomed by local inhabitants, schools and the general public. The number of visitors averages at 2000 per month. We also help train Wanchai inhabitants as cultural tour-guides, who will lead students and the general public to have a glimpse of Wanchai from different perspectives. Some tours organized in the past include: “Journey of Preservation: Wanchai and its Culture”, “Venturing onto the Streets – Streets and Stories”; and “Ghosts and the Ghostly Routes”.
